Retirement announcement of Chief Constable Iain Spittal

20/10/2017

"The Federation exists to support, influence and negotiate for our members. We are there to challenge, and this can only ever be done effectively with buy-in from chief officers.

"Throughout many difficult times Mr Spittal, as both DCC and as Chief Constable, has maintained a positive rapport with our office, appreciating the insight we offer from those at the forefront of delivering his vision.

"The force has seen significant change under his leadership. Beyond simply paper exercises he has helped shape positive cultural change, embedding the need for everyone to support each other and improving the service for the good of officers and public alike, as recognised by HMICFRS.

"A visible leader, he has not shied away from tackling historical issues, embracing openness and admitting failures where they existed.

"While the force has come a long way under his tenure, there is still much work to be done and tough times ahead as 'Beyond 2020' seeks to become reality.

"The solid building blocks of a brighter future for Cleveland Police have been firmly laid. The next chief constable must build on these for the good of officers, staff and the public we are ultimately here to protect.

"The Federation wishes Mr Spittal the best for his future ventures."
